Detailed instructions on how to configure Aruba L3 Mobility IAP

Aruba L3 Mobility is a feature that is enabled when the user configures the Wifi Aruba IAP, which performs the task of roaming the client without losing the IP address. This article DNG Corp will guide you how to configure Aruba L3 Mobility in the easiest and most detailed way.

Overview of Aruba L3 Mobility

IPAs form a single Instant Network when they are in the same Layer 2 (L2) domain. And when the number of clients increases, we need more subnets to reduce the broadcasting cost. In that case, the client is allowed to roam away from the Instant Network it first connected to (Home Network). Then, this client will switch to another supported network with the same WLAN access parameters (Foreign Network) and continue its existing sessions.

Aruba L3 Mobility is a feature developed by Aruba on Aruba IAP wifi lines. This feature allows clients to roam without losing IP addresses and connection sessions. If the WLAN access parameters are the same on these networks, clients are allowed to connect to IAPs in a certain Instant Network. At the same time, they can roam to APs in a foreign Instant Network and continue existing connection sessions.

Aruba L3 Mobility Overview

Once roaming on these networks is complete, the client can continue to work with the IP address after roaming. In addition, users can configure a list of Virtual Controller IP addresses with the support of Aruba L3 Mobility.
Aruba L3 Mobility is capable of defining the Mobility Domain of a set of Instant Networks with the same WLAN access parameters. This is to support roaming for the client. In which, the Instant Network that the client first connects to is called the Home Network. After the client is roamed to a Foreign Network, an AP in the Home Network (Home AP) will anchor all traffic to or from this client. The AP that the client is connected to in the Foreign Network (Foreign AP) will forward all client traffic to the Home AP via the GRE tunnel.
When the client first connects to the Instant Network, a notification will be sent to all configured Virtual Controller IP addresses. This function helps the user to determine whether this is a layer 3 roaming client or not. Once the information about any configured Virtual Controller has been confirmed, the client will immediately identify itself as a L3 roaming client. In case the AP does not have a GRE tunnel to the Home Network, a new tunnel will be automatically formed from the client’s Home Network.

It should be noted that each Foreign AP has only one corresponding Home AP on each Instant Network to avoid duplication of broadcast traffic. In addition, separate GRE tunnels will be created for each pair of Foreign AP and Home AP. Therefore, in the system we will have many separate GRE tunnels. However, if there is a peer AP that is a Foreign AP for one client and a Home AP for another client, then two separate GRE tunnels will be used to handle L3 roaming traffic between these APs.
If the client’s subnet is detected to be unsuccessful, the Foreign AP will determine its subnet when sending the first L3 packet. But if the subnet is not a local subnet but belongs to another Instant Network, then the client will be considered an L3 roaming client. Accordingly, all of the client’s traffic will be forwarded to the Home Network via the GRE tunnel.
Instructions for configuring L3 Mobility with Wifi Aruba IAP
The above content DNG Corp has shared an overview of L3 Mobility Aruba. Below, we will provide instructions on the steps to configure Aruba L3 Mobility with Wifi Aruba IAP.

Using the connection model

In the Aruba L3 Mobility connection model, we will use 2 AP 505 Aruba that are connected to 2 different VLANs and the APs are taking on the role of Virtual Controllers.

Then, L3 Mobility will be configured on these two Virtual Controllers so that clients between the two Instant Networks can roam to L3 together. In the case of more Instant Networks, users only need to add these Instant Networks.

Configuration of L3 Mobility

To configure Aruba L3 Mobility with Wifi Aruba IAP, we follow these steps:
First, we need to access the Configuration Menu bar.
Then select System, select Show Advanced Options in the right panel.
The L3 Mobility menu will appear below.
  • Continue to select to allow Home agent load balancing: This option allows Virtual Controllers to specify APs to be able to create corresponding GRE tunnels when roaming. This helps reduce the load when the original Home AP is under heavy load. From there, the APs will be load balanced according to the round robin mechanism in the same Home Network.
  • In the Virtual Controller IP address section, we click on the “+” sign and then add all the Virtual Controller IPs. Additionally, you can add the Local Controller IP to unify the configuration between APs.
  • Finally, under the Subnets section, select to add all the network ranges of the Instant Network.
  • Continue the same with the remaining Virtual Controllers.
